Starting today the Muslims from all over Malaysia including Kuala Lumpur observe the month of Ramadhan where the Muslims (who have enough capability to do it) need to fast from dawn to dusk and avoid the things that can forfeit the fasting.

According to the Gregorian Calendar (the western calendar based on the solar system) today is August 22 2009 orĀ  Ramadhan 1 1430 (based on the Hegira-Lunar calendar). In Kuala Lumpur about 40 % of the population are Muslims and they need to obey this because fasting in month of Ramadhan is compulsory to Muslims.

If you’ve seen the announcement in the television, it was clearly stated that fasting month starts on August 22 2009 but just to be exact, actually it starts on August 21 2009.

Why? Because according to the Hegira or Muslim calendar the new day or date starts when the Maghrib prayer time has come thus we can say Ramadhan 1 1420 started at the dusk yesterday but if we use the Gregorian calendar the new day started around 5 hours later. Read more on Fasting month 2009…

Sometime I buy the English newspapers and my popular choice is The Star and probably the most popular English newspaper in Malaysia. I like it very much as it is much thicker than other newspapers especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Read more on English newspapers in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia…
